Chapter Thirty

Pikeville wasn’t as far from Hope as Alex remembered. He had traveled the distance some when he was a teenager, but not since. It was smaller than Hope. More run-down than Hope, but that had always been the case.

Alex, Bryson, and Gwen weren’t there to take note of the dilapidated buildings, crumbling sidewalks, and rusted street signs. Those had been there long before the EMP. The three of them were there to look at the people. They were there to see how they were trying to take care of themselves and why they were failing, if that were true.

They were met at the town entrance by armed guards. Alex looked at Gwen, who was in the passenger seat beside him, and he wondered why she was here. He and Bryson, Alex could understand. If something went poorly, Leland would be rid of two guys who were dating his daughters—a father’s dream. But either Leland truly thought this situation was going to be benign or he was letting go of his daughter and allowing her to be herself.

From what the three of them understood, Emmett was to take them on a tour of the town. Leland had told them to watch out for theatrics and to try and get a feel for the whole town. Then they were instructed to give no indication whatsoever of their assessment to Emmett before they got back with Leland. This was to hopefully keep Emmett from doing something stupid if it wasn’t going his way.

The guards led them to the center of town. Alex couldn’t help but notice the people on the street. They looked like homeless beggars, which didn’t make a lot of sense considering there hadn’t been much of a homeless population in Pikeville before.

“Maybe this is part of the theatrics?” Bryson said from the back seat.

“We’ll see,” Alex said.

The three of them got out of the car when their convoy stopped, and Emmett walked up to them, two armed guards behind him. The sight seemed odd to Alex, considering there were no active hostiles around and the three of them posed no threat. But Emmett seemed to be walking around like a battle could break out at any moment and he was the prized general.

“Good morning,” Alex said.

“Let’s get right to it,” Emmett said. He stopped for a moment when he noticed Gwen. “Your dad sent you?”

“I came on my own,” Gwen said. “But he trusts me, yes.”

Emmett raised an eyebrow and it seemed to Alex that the mayor was taking a mental note.

The tour was more or less what any of them expected. Emmett took them to what looked to be breadlines and soup kitchens where people were being served meager portions. Alex tried to see if they looked like they were starving, but it was hard with all the winter clothes on. They didn’t have particularly gaunt faces, but this had only been going on for a month. With even a small amount of supplies, the town shouldn’t be starving yet.
